Today is not a generally positive day around the world (or at least in my bubble). It’s inauguration day. But let’s not get into that here. With that, however, I expected very few releases, as strategically, it seemed unwise to compete for attention on the internet. Well, music stops for nothing.
Notable releases of this week include a funky tune from a local favorite, Busty and the Bass and Hippo Campus’ “Way It Goes” off their upcoming album. Another major highlight this week from the music industry is John Mayer’s four new tracks off his upcoming and seventh studio album, The Search For Everything, which comes three years after Paradise Valley. Although he’s taking a slightly different direction with this album – especially with its release process (it’s coming in waves of four instead of a few singles then the full album) – the John Mayer style is still very much present and sounding great, if I may add. Lastly, we’ve got a new Arcade Fire track, which seems to be exclusively on Tidal. At first impression, I’m not sold, which has frequently been the case with many of their tracks (I actually hated their sound when I first heard them closing the Grammys in 2011). So, I’ll be giving this one a few more listens before making any judgments. Most of my new favorite tracks of the week didn’t actually make it onto any of Spotify’s New Music Friday playlists, but thanks to my Release Radar, I was able to pick them all up – one of the many perks of following artists on Spotify.
