#NewMusicFriday: December 16 2016

#NewMusicFriday is a weekly roundup of my favorite, noteworthy recent releases.

Follow the playlist here.

December isn’t generally a big month for new releases, other than Christmas tunes. With that, although this list is on the¬†shorter side, there are some solid bangers.
First, we’ve got a track I’m working with at Wavo right now from Honors, a newer artist to the scene. “Over” is getting some solid hype online, with over a dozen YouTube reposts¬†including taste influencers like MrSuicideSheep. Second is Flume’s “My Boo” Triple J cover. Honestly, at first, I hated it. I felt like all the people included added nothing more than some¬†hype (Kinda like “hey this is Flume and unnecessarily massive entourage”). ¬†Vince Staples and KUCKA¬†are the voices behind Smoke & Retribution, a track that may very well make a top slot in Triple J’s hottest 100. That being said, as the last Triple J cover during Matt & Alex’s reign, it was understandable why so many people would be included. I’ve now listened to the track a dozen more times, partly because I love it, partly because I can’t get it out of my head. We’ve then got a Big Wild cover of Gallant’s “Talking To Myself” which brings a nice spin on the original and a new single off Andrew McMahon’s (formerly lead singer in Jacks Mannequin) upcoming album. Give ’em a listen, save ’em, let me know your thoughts and new discoveries down below. Happy listening!

Honors – Over
Flume, Vince Staples, Ngaiire, Vera Blue, KUCKA¬†– My Boo (Triple J’s Like a Version – side note: WHAT! Since when are Like A Versions on Spotify?! We need the DMA’S Cher cover up here)
Gallant – Talking to Myself (Big Wild Remix)
Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness – Walking In My Sleep

Bonus: Check out Matt & Alex’s hilarious (and also kinda good?) Like a Version Musical Massacre from their last day as Triple J hosts:

Check out my Confront review for A Tribe Called Red’s show at Corona Theatre last night.
